Deemu stopped at the first wall of mirrors. A dozen versions of him stared back—some too tall, some too small, and one with fire pouring from both hands.
“You’ll lose control before you reach the top,” the nearest reflection whispered.
Heat rushed into Deemu’s cheeks. A flame snapped from his fingertips and struck the stone. The reflection smiled.
Behind him, Hina said, “It wants you angry.”
“I know what it wants,” Deemu muttered, though his fire was already climbing his arms.
Fu peeked from behind a crystal. “Then maybe don’t give it what it wants?”
The mirror changed. Now it showed Kai looking disappointed. Deemu’s chest tightened. He closed his fists. One breath. Then another. The fire shrank from a roar to a glow.
The reflection frowned.
Deemu stepped forward. “You can show me anything you want,” he said. “But you don’t get to choose what I do next.”
A thin crack raced across the mirror.
